Kirkwood Community College offers training for a wide variety of IT jobs, including software development, support, programming and database technology. Students can earn diplomas, certificates, associate degrees, transfer credits or non-credit classes. Want more information? Information Technology Apprenticeship Program (Coming Soon: call for more information)

Kirkwood’s IT Apprenticeship program will consist of paid, on-the-job training mixed with classroom instruction. Upon completion, apprentices will earn a certificate and will have the opportunity to continue to earn an associate degree.

Computer Software Development

Students learn various phases of software development including how to design, write, test and document computer programs with a variety of tools, using in-demand languages such as Java, C# and SQL.  In addition to learning to program for desktop computers and other devices, students also explore internet programming with technologies such as ASP, JSP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Computer Support Specialist

Computer support specialists provide technical assistance to users as well as maintain, upgrade, and repair computer systems and networks. Students interested in this field should have an interest in working with people. Specialists constantly interact with customers and fellow employees as they answer questions and give valuable advice.

Health Information Technology

Health information technology (HIT) professionals collect, analyze and manage patient health information, then communicate with patients, physicians, nurses, administrators, lawyers and insurance companies about the information in these records. Kirkwood’s HIT program focuses on medical coding as well as the management of health information.

Health Information Technology – Online

The Health Information Technology program is primarily offered online, with the exception of clinical rotations and some courses. Health information technicians assemble patient health information and make sure medical records are complete.

Java Credit Certificate

Kirkwood’s Java programming classes emphasize coding, testing, and debugging simple applets and applications. Students will also learn advanced GUI, exception handling, multithreading, multimedia, files and streams, networking, and data structures.

Mobile App Development Credit Certificate

In Kirkwood’s mobile apps classes, students will learn Android development for phone and tablet devices, Apple software development with the Objective-C programming language and the Xcode development environment.

Credit Certificate in .NET

In the .NET classes, students will learn Microsoft .NET architecture, the Visual Studio IDE and object-oriented programming with .NET. Classes also emphasize the use of SQL and ADO.NET for the creation of stand-alone and distributed database applications to solve common business problems.

Credit Certificate in CompTIA Network

Earning your Network+ certification demonstrates your knowledge of the functions of networking components and recognizes the knowledge and skills needed to install, configure and troubleshoot basic networking hardware, protocols and services. Kirkwood's Network+ program not only prepares you to take the certification exam but also equips you to perform the job of a network technician.

PC Technician Credit Certificate / Diploma

The PC Technician program is designed to teach students the fundamental skills and knowledge required to support personal computers in a networked and stand-alone environment. Completion of this diploma is a good lead-in to the LAN Management program for students who want to continue and pursue an associate's degree.
