The area of information technology is one of the fastest-growing and highest-paying in the country, especially in eastern Iowa. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics estimates that in the next four years, computer programming jobs will grow by 20%, web developer jobs will grow by 23% and computer support specialist jobs will grow by 22%. On a national level, it’s estimated that there will be 1.4 million jobs in IT by 2020, but only 400,000 computer science graduates able to fill them.

Eastern Iowa Community College offers two areas of concentration in IT: networking and programming. Both areas will prepare students for a variety of jobs in the technology sector. IT employment is high in the Quad Cities area, including in the Davenport, Maquoketa, Clinton, Muscatine and Wapello areas.

Computer programming training

Eastern Iowa Community College offers several courses of study in computer programming, including database management, web design and modeling, virtual environments and simulations.

Programming

Computer programming can best be described as problem-solving! Programmers write code that is interpreted by computers as software, and it often involves a lot of troubleshooting along the way.

Database Management

Databases organize and manage specialized software, ensure the correct users can access it and secure it against unauthorized users. The database manager creates the database and makes sure it runs as it should.

Games and Simulations

This skillset is used when creating video games, animation, scientific simulations, or understanding phenomena that are too expensive or perilous to try in real life

Web Design

Web designers create websites, including how they look, how users interact with them, how they perform and how their technical side operates.

Computer Applications

Learn how to implement the latest computer applications in an information technology career.

Networking training

Networking

A networker is responsible for setting up and maintaining the WAN, LAN and the internet/intranet systems. They maintain the hardware and provide administrative support.

Help Desk Administration

Help desk administrators are responsible for the installation, operation, support and maintenance of a system’s hardware and software infrastructure. 

Server Administration

A server administrator works with Linux and Windows systems that support GIS infrastructure, offering SA engineering and provisioning, operations, support, research and development.

Security and Forensics

A security and forensics specialist ensures that sensitive data is protected, and identifies weaknesses in the security system. They analyze intruders’ methods and ensure they do not gain access to the network.
